GREATER LAGUNA COAST FIRE SAFE COUNCIL
Meeting: Monday, October 8, 2001, 4:00 pm Emerald Bay Community Club House
Attendees: David Horne, Linda Frost, John Fox, Jim Reed, Mark Baker and Ilse Lenschow
Next Meeting: Thursday, October 25, 2001, 9 am Laguna Beach City Hall
Actions: The following announcements/reports/decisions/actions and methods of implementation were discussed and decided:
1. A final copy of the steering committee-approved information, including initial budget allocation perimeters, required by the Sacramento Regional Foundation was dispersed to all committee members present.
2. Chair, David Horne reported a Catch 22 reluctance on the part of Grantor to write a check allocating monies to an individual party. Inasmuch as part of the grant is designated to the task of forming the Greater Laguna Coastal Fire Safe Council and will include the process of obtaining non-profit status, Horne will challenge this restriction and maintain communication with Sacramento Regional Foundation contact, Arlene Wilson-Grant, Program Officer, in regard to grant compliance issues.
3. No problem is anticipated at this time with the deposit of grant monies in either Wells Fargo Bank or Bank of America. The initial balance will exceed any and all established service charge requirements.
4. The services of a marketing person and a facilitator have been retained based on quality of submitted proposal, professional ability and budget considerations. Selected services to be paid from forthcoming grant monies.
-Dr. Shay Sayre will represent the Council in regard to advertising and event planning.
-Carole Zavala, CZ Associates, will represent the Council in regard to meeting facilitation and assistance in regard to non-profit status procedures.
5. Logo design, ad copy and ad placement were discussed. Media campaign plans to precede the October 27th membership kick-off meeting are in process and include:
-A half page ad will run 2x’s in the Laguna Beach weekly Coastline News. -A quarter page ad will run once and be strategically placed within the Orange County Register weekly editions targeting the communities of Laguna Beach, Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel. -Jim Reed will check possibility of hanging a banner in Laguna Beach. -Steering committee members will place posters. -Formal invitations will be mailed to targeted member potentials and an agenda for the October 27th event will be enclosed. -Ilse Lenschow will implement a telephone follow-up to the posted invitations.
6. The agenda for the Greater Laguna Coast Fire Safe Council membership kick-off meeting was approved. Invited presenters will include, but not be limited to, representatives from: Laguna Beach Fire Department, OCFA and Emerald Bay, the Laguna Beach Water District, emergency preparedness and insurance industry organizations.
-Visual aids, handouts and refreshments were discussed. Those agreed upon include: Video footage of the 10/27/93 firestorm (tape to be loaned by and returned to John Fox) and Laguna Beach: Response to Challenge booklets (to be delivered to meeting site by David Horne). Other appropriate handouts, including membership cards, will also be available. Jim Reed will check on the appropriateness of serving food and beverage to kick-off meeting guests.
