GREATER LAGUNA COAST FIRE SAFE COUNCIL

I. A motion to approve the minutes from April 15, 2003, was seconded and approved unanimously.

II. Introductions and Announcements:

III. 2003-2004 Grant Applications and
IV. Grant Program Management:

We received two grants in the amounts of $36,000 (curbside chipping program) and $24,000 (senior assisted chipping program). It can start anytime since it has received BLM approval. Staffing is needed and several names were suggested to manage the program. The “Community Fire Safe Program” grant was turned down. David reports that the California Fire Safe council will be streamlining the grant process so future grants will be easier to apply for.

V. Water Wise/Fire Safe Garden Dedication:

The dedication will be November 4, from 4-6 p.m. Board members should have received invitations in the mail.

VI. 2002 Grant Extension and Information Dissemination:

Our existing grant is due to end November 30 but has been extended to the end of January.

VII. RFP for Landscaping Guide;

Wayne Peterson shared a draft “ RFP for preparation of the Property Owner’s Guide to Fire Hazard Reduction in Laguna Beach, California”. It was discussed whether this draft could be expanded to embrace the Community Fire Plan. Wayne will talk to several landscape architects to get their feedback to the draft RFP.

VIII. Upcoming Fire Season- Red Flag Fire Alert

Wade announced that an additional 30 citizens have recently been trained, bringing the total patrol to close to 70. He expressed a need to train additional coordinators and has begun soliciting names for those positions. David and Barbara said they will train as “back-up” coordinators.
