Greater Laguna Beach Fire Safe Council January 26, 2002
I. Introductions: ·Overview of past accomplishments ·Power point demonstration of web site
II. Website: overview by David Horne ·WEBSITE ADDRESS is lagunacoastfiresafecouncil.org ·Official Name-Greater Laguna Beach Fire Safe Council ·Links to the national organization ·Open to new ideas/content-contact David ·We have a fifteen month contract with web designer ·We need press coverage to describe the site and what we are doing ·We will follow up with Laguna Coastline
III. David Horne requested approval of John Fox as an additional approved signature on checking account. ·It was moved by Linda Frost, and seconded by Wayne Peterson, that John Fox be so approved. It was approved by unanimous vote.
IV. Liability insurance for Board Volunteers is in the process of being researched.
V. Red Flag Project- Basic components and update was provided by Pat Cooper. ·Citizen support patrol for early detection ·High profile to discourage arson ·Training would raise awareness of “signs” of potential fire problems
Issues: ·Meeting with fire Department ·Other areas that need to be kept informed that are peripheral to Laguna Beach (Crystal Cove etc.) ·Communication ·Volunteers- requirements, application, screening is critical ·Laguna Beach Fire Department and OCFA will help with training ·Cell phones will be used to communicate ·Personal Autos with some sort of identification will be used ·Ken Frank approved project ·Regulations are being drawn up by Rich Witesman ·Volunteers will work in teams of two, with both driving and foot patrol ·There is currently a canyon watch in Trabuco Canyon, done by volunteers on their own, but they now have money and are focused on getting more organized ·There usually is a 2-3 day lead warning before high-risk days ·We want to initially target twenty volunteers ·Consider “Red Flag” warning in a highly visible public area ·City contact is Mark Baker the current Fire Department liaison ·Newport Beach should be involved as soon as possible. Areas have been annexed to North Laguna boundaries ·Who else needs to be involved in this discussion? Other homeowner groups. ·Other Red Flag Project Members: Ken, Pat, David, Gene, Melissa O’Neil potential member (David to follow-up) ·Merchant Involvement to alert community need to contact chamber representative ·Projection of image on bluffs across from Art-a-Fair, from Circle K in North Laguna to South Laguna area.
Next Steps: ·Get input on web-site/e-mail ·Identify specific areas (the city clerk has a list of homeowner’s association) ·Arch Beach ·Emerald Bay ·Neighborhood Watch ·Alta Laguna Blvd. ·Irvine Cove ·Dartmoor ·Refine draft (Rich’s work) ·Set priorities- next steps ·$6,000 budget available
